چکیده

This paper illustrates how archaeomagnetic dating can be used for palaeochannel fills within floodplain sequences. The sites investigated are palaeochannels associated with the mediaeval braided/anastomosing channels of an unstable reach of the River Trent at Hemington, north-west Leicestershire. This reach has revealed abundant archaeological remains including fish weirs, anchor stones, a Norman mill and three mediaeval bridges. The studies used here show good agreement between archaeomagnetic dating and other evidence from archaeology, dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating. Fabric and mineral analyses of the sediments are used to identify the source of the remanent magnetization and it is believed that this is predominantly the result of the biogenic synthesis of magnetic minerals in high pH but anoxic conditions. This study illustrates the type of alluvial sediments that are most suitable for archaeomagnetic dating. ? 1998 Academic Press Limited

Optical dating of Holocene lake bed sediments of the Nimbluk Plain, Khorasan, Northeast Iran: Implications for the climate change and palaeo-environment

We have investigated an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating study in the Nimbluk lakebed in Khorasan, northeast Iran. Two samples of the lake-bed sediments from ~1 m below the land surface are successfully dated at 7.3-9.9 ka. All necessary experiments have been performed to choose the most suitable procedure for dating quartz extracts using single aliquot regeneration method (SAR). ...

Elucidation of Palaeochannels in Parts of Punjab (india) Using Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System

Climatic changes and neotectonic movements in the north-western plains of India have led to the migration and abandonment of drainage systems to form a large number of palaeochannels. Palaeochannels present in the study area were extracted from final geomorphological map. These were delineated from satellite image by considering combination of various factors. These channels show a discontinuou...

C:N:P Molar Ratios, Sources and 14C Dating of Surficial Sediments from the NW Slope of Cuba

The surficial sediments recovered from 12 sites located near the channel axis of the Florida Straits and the lower slope off NW Cuba were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC), nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (TP), elemental C:N:P ratios, C and N isotopic values, and 14C dating. The depth profiles of TOC, TN, and TP (0-18 cm) displayed a downcore trend and a significant variation. The TOC values we...

He–Pb double dating of detrital zircons from the Ganges and Indus Rivers: Implication for quantifying sediment recycling and provenance studies

He–Pb double dating of detrital zircons is more reliable than conventional U–Pb dating for tracing the source of detritus in sediments and can be used to constrain the percentage of recycled material in sediments. Conventional U–Pb dating can be used to constrain the provenance of sediments if the U–Pb zircon age pattern for potential source regions is known but can only be used to trace the so...

Adsorption and Leaching Behavior of Copper, Zinc and Lead Ions by Three Different River Nile Sediments at Aswan, Egypt

The present study was carried out to investigate the adsorption and leaching behavior of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ by sediments collected from the western banks of three different sectors along River Nile at Aswan governorate, Egypt. The feasibility of sediments for the removal of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ from aqueous solutions was tested under the effect of three conditions (pH, initial metal concentrati...
